A Legend Returns to the Field – The 200,000th CLAAS Combine Harvests Again

Nearly six decades after its ceremonial handover by CLAAS founder August Claas, the 200,000th CLAAS combine - a 1968 SENATOR - has made a triumphant return to active harvesting. Originally presented to Scottish farmer John Steven on 16 August 1968, this SENATOR marked a pivotal moment for CLAAS, doubling its production just six years after reaching the 100,000th combine milestone and cementing its status among the world’s leading manufacturers. 

After years of reliable service in Scotland, the SENATOR found its way back to CLAAS UK’s headquarters in Saxham in 2025. The Technical Service team at Saxham meticulously restored the SENATOR, aided by exceptional parts support from the CLAAS World Parts Centre in Hamm, where many original components were still available overnight. Their efforts revived the machine’s full functionality while preserving its distinctive patina and the character earned through decades of hard work. 

On 24 July 2026, the SENATOR proved its enduring performance by harvesting around 20 tonnes of wheat in just five hours on the Suffolk farm of George and Freddie Gittus. The event was made even more remarkable by the Digital team, who tracked the combine’s progress live via CLAAS connect, highlighting the blend of tradition and modern technology. 

The emotional highlight came on 31st July at Honey Hill Farm in Little Saxham, just behind the CLAAS UK headquarters. Still farmed by the Mann family - the original CLAAS importers in the 1930s-this location saw three generations of CLAAS combines working together: a 1953 CLAAS SF, the historic SENATOR, and a state-of-the-art TRION 720. The technological leap was clear: the SF managed about four tonnes per hour, while the TRION achieved an impressive 40 tonnes per hour.

The SENATOR was more than just a new model. With its contemporary design, updated CLAAS corporate identity, and the introduction of the iconic Seed Green livery, it heralded a new era shaped by Helmut Claas’s pioneering vision. In the year that would have marked Helmut Claas’s 100th birthday, the restored SENATOR stands as a powerful symbol of innovation and progress, echoing the remarkable legacy of CLAAS.
